Who is it for?
The Producers Mentorship Program suits people who already have some producing experience in the performing arts and want to be mentored to take their producing practice to the next level.
If you are not sure if you have had producing experience, please refer to the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), where we give examples of the broad range of skills and experiences that may count as ‘producing’.
How will the Producers Mentorship Program work?
Opportunities are tailored to meet the needs of each mentor / mentee pairing.
It is important to note that the producer mentee has to work with at least one independent producer mentor (rather than with a producer who works inside of a funded organisation).
You will need to put in a joint application with your independent producer mentor, including a workplan.
Some mentees may want very specific skills from their mentors and otherwise work quite independently on their own independent performing arts projects. Other mentees may want more support from and involvement with their mentors. Both and/or a combination of the above is welcomed!
For the Producers Mentorship Program, it is ideal if you have already worked with an independent artist / performing arts collective / independent company as a producer. For example, you may have supported the delivery of a project, including tasks such as helping with events management, marketing and promotions and community engagement.
However, we recognise that (especially early on in your career), you may not have current relationships with artists / collectives / companies. If this is the case, TNA and / or your producer mentor can help connect you with an artist / collective / company.
Ultimately, we are looking for people who are passionate about supporting independent artists / collectives / companies. If you are not sure if you are the right fit for the Producers Mentorship Program, please contact the VIPI Program Producer to discuss your experiences.
First Peoples Applicants: Applications are encouraged from First Peoples who are living and working in Victoria. At least one mentee for the Producers Mentorship Program is reserved for an applicant who is from a Traditional Owner group of Victoria. First Peoples mentees will receive additional support from First Peoples mentors.
Deaf Applicants: We have allocated a budget for AUSLAN interpreters to support at least one Deaf mentee.
What is on offer?
The Producers Mentorship Program offers an independent producer mentor and a producer mentee the opportunity to work together for a minimum of 6 months and up to a 2-year period for up to 3 days per week.
The producer mentee receives a part-time wage at a rate of $45,000 per full-time year (pro rata), plus on-costs (superannuation and WorkCover, which TNA will administer on your behalf).
In addition, each mentee receives up to $4,050 as a professional development fund to support relevant activities, such as travel and accommodation to attend performing arts markets and so on. On top of this, the producer mentor receives up to $5,000 per year (maximum of $10,000 over two-years) to cover the cost of hosting a producer mentee.

If relevant, there is also the possibility for a producer mentee to be matched with multiple mentors to support their professional development. In addition, TNA will facilitate other opportunities, such as the Salon Series tailored to the participants’ needs.
There are at least 8 places available between 2020 and 2022.
You will need to submit a joint application with a mentor, which includes a work plan. TNA will be facilitating a Meet and Greet between potential producer mentors and mentees in January 2020. Please register your interest with the VIPI Program Producer.
We are still finalising the application questions. However, you may expect these questions:
- Please describe your producing practice to date: which artists / artist collectives / independent companies have you worked with?
- What is the ideal mentor / mentee model for you? What is the ideal way you want to develop yourself professionally?
- Why are you interested in this opportunity?
- Why do you think the two of you are a good match and/or why do you think the working model you are proposing is a good match for the progression of your career?
- What is the proposed duration of your mentorship over the next 2 year, ie how long you plan to work with your mentor for?
- How many hours per week will you be able to commit to the program?
- Do you require any access support in undertaking the program?
In addition, you will be asked to submit a work plan and budget.

2020 Dates for the Producers Mentorship Program
January 2020: Detailed guidelines available on Theatre Network Australia’s website.
January 2020: Applications Open for Round 1.
30 March 2020: Applications close for Round 1.
1st week of May: Announcement of Round 1 recipients.
May 2020: Producers Mentorship Program Round 1 begins.
15 May 2020: Applications Open for Round 2.
15 June 2020: Applications Close for Round 2.
15 July 2020: Announcement of Round 2 recipients.
There will be two rounds of applications in 2020 and one round of applications in the first half of 2021.
