Theatre Network Australia ‘T’ Operational Model

Theatre Network Australia has completed its transition to a national service organisation for small to medium and independent performing arts. We are now registered as Theatre Network Au Incorporated, trading as Theatre Network Australia.

As a small organisation, we operate with a ‘T’ model, see below – a high level of national advocacy, the Australian Theatre Forum, and research and information across each of the states/territories (supported by Australia Council), and a deep program of activity in Victoria, supported by Creative Victoria. The tiered membership prices reflect this model. We will work in partnership with colleagues to run a sector meeting in each state and territory every two years. Instead of a national representative board, we have advisory colleagues across the country. In NSW we work in partnership with our sister organisation Theatre Network NSW.

Our Interstate Colleagues

  • In New South Wales, Theatre Network NSW is dedicated to strengthening and enriching the NSW theatre sector:
  • In South Australia, a biennial performance makers’ forum, and other industry events are run by the Arts Industry Council (SA):
  • In Tasmania, the Theatre Council Tasmania advocates the industry’s needs to government:
  • In Western Australia, the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA is the peak policy and advocacy body representing the arts and cultural sector in Western Australia: and the Blue Room Theatre runs programs for independent WA theatre makers including theatre forums and events:
  • In Canberra, The Street Theatre runs Theatre Network ACT, with six monthly meetings held for theatre artists and organisations.
  • In late 2015, members of Queensland’s arts sector formed a new body, now called the Queensland Chamber of Arts and Culture (QCAC), which aims to better identify key issues pertaining to the arts and cultural sector in Queensland, and to advocate for those issues in a range of forums:

National Program Summary 2017

  1. 2017 Australian Theatre Forum, (Adelaide 3-5 October, 2017)
    • Extensive Independent Support Strategy, with assessment panels in each state/territory.
    • Consultation by ATF team across the country.
    • Sector Input Survey open since late 2016 collecting ideas.
  2. Research and Information:
    • 2017 Small to Medium Salary Survey.
    • National E-News Bulletin.
    • Tertiary training, research and university engagement.
  3. Advocacy and Sector Development:
    • Promotion of S2M sector issues including better sector data collection.
    • ArtsPeak Executive role.
    • ArtsFront steering committee.
    • Advocacy for the youth performing arts and theatre for young people sectors.
    • Support of Blakfella Performing Arts Alliance, in partnership with Ilbijerri.
  4. Touring and presentation development:
    • Advocacy to increase support for artists and S2M companies in touring and presentation, including roll-out of ‘Go Pitch’ grants for markets/showcases.
    • Strengthen future of touring through Performing Arts Touring Alliance (PATA): diversifying work toured, more sustainable practices, greater support for artists.
    • Leadership roles at key national events.
  5. National engagement strategy (2017 and 2018)
    • VIC – Dedicated Victorian program funded by Creative Victoria.
    • ACT – Sector focus group meeting, Arts ACT meeting, 2018.
    • SA – Engagement through Australian Theatre Forum throughout year 2017.
    • NSW – Advocacy Masterclass, with TNNSW, meetings with other peak bodies.
    • QLD – Sector focus group meeting (with Queensland Chamber of Arts and Culture), sector network function at Queensland Showcase.
    • NT – ATF info session in 2017, sector meeting in 2018.
    • TAS – Sector gathering 2017. Additional meetings.
    • WA – Sector meeting 2017. ATF info session.

National Member Consultation

We regularly seek input and advice from members, interstate colleagues and peak bodies as a core part of our advocacy and sector development work. We seek specific sector issues from members in the sign up process, and seek input as a part of our activities in the National Engagement Strategy.
